I pleaded with her, of course I did. “Don’t make this any harder than it has to be,” She replied. Did the future plans, the goodnight kisses and the “I love you”s mean nothing? Was I just some little plaything for your amusement, To use and abuse and throw away When you had no more use for me? I thought I saw a tear trickle down your face, But I only caught the briefest of glimpses. Was that a smile or a frown? Either way it doesn’t really matter. It’s no consolation for the emptiness inside of me. But I wonder: do I really need you? Maybe I should just hide away. Do I need anyone at all? I’m sure there’ll be no more hurt or pain, If I just turn off and curl into a ball.

Protagonist: And so I broke down the Isolosphere, and learnt to love again. It wasn’t a short or easy process at all, but it was all worthwhile, Yeah, there’s definitely still pain and fear and hurt, But ultimately, in the end, the pain informs the happiness, The low mood, the depression, the anxiety? Those feelings occasionally come around every now and then, But I think I truly beat the Isolosphere I don’t think I have to worry about it again But still, I sometimes hear those voices… Voices: And on some distant day, you’ll find yourself astray, You’ll succumb to the fear, and return to the Isolosphere…

Demo EP recorded as part of my Bachelor's Degree. This is a very rough demo, only intended to show my intentions from the sheet music. I plan to re-record (recording all guitars & trumpets) and do a proper mix of this EP in the next year if possible.

Isolosphere began life with the simple idea of wanting to create an album which represented my diverse musical taste and influence as a composer. Using Progressive Rock as a base to start from (because of both my affinity towards it and its precedent for utilising multiple genres in unconventional song structures), I incorporated elements from numerous musical genres from various time periods, including: Funk, Black Metal, Progressive Metal, Jazz Fusion, Impressionism, Minimalism and Serialism. It is the Progressive Rock backbone and overarching narrative which hold this EP together as a coherent whole.

This narrative revolves around depression and The Hedgehog’s Dilemma, a metaphor about the challenges of human intimacy posed by Arthur Schopenhauer and Sigmund Freud. The Isolosphere is my own allegory for the isolation created by fearing intimacy, and this EP follows the journey of the protagonist who is hurt, enters the Isolosphere, and then, realising its pointlessness, escapes from it, breaking it down.
